Challenges of precision molded optical glass components against the plastic optics

When it comes to recent years advancements in the optical industry many feel that the optical glass components are more pricy and not much durable unlike the plastic optics. This molded plastic optics has been considered to be better in terms of cost as well as performance rather than the polished optical fiber glass.

FEW MISCONCEPTIONS

It has been noted that the optical fiber glass unlike the plastic counterpart are considered by many users that it lacks the features like the diffractive elements, aspheric surfaces and the mounting options which was not discussed until PGM now wishes to clear the doubt and point out how many benefits are there by the usage of the glass ones rather than the plastic models.

PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIAL

When it comes to optical molding one can note that the solution set attained by glass is more than that of plastic. There are nearly more than 100 options for the moldable glass whereas that is not the case when it comes for the plastic counterpart. Optical molding also exhibits that a better range of Abbe number, refraction and optical transmission and on the whole a better performance can be got from the optical filter glass but not so is achieved by the much preferred plastic optics.

Property of weight significance

Amidst the many other thermal performance of moldable glass the one thing which strikes the plastic above the optic glass components of a glass is the weight .The weight of plastics is found to be at least 2 :1 which is a possible plus which plastics get against the glass optics.

QUALTITATIVE PROPERTIES

Glass optics is found to have better environmental durability, complex geo metrics ,scratch resistance rather than the plastics. Integration of the multiple optical surfaces is possible with the lenses formed by the PGM.

Greater consideration in terms of consistency, performance and better readability is all possible with the simple glass lenses also.

COST

The basic cost advantage which is for plastic optics is due to the speed of the process rather than the actual material cost .In recent studies it has been found that 98 percent of the total material used for the plastic molding cannot be reused for any optic application but the re usage of glass molding is more effective.

THE GLASS OPTICS EXCEL

The advancements of today states that just like plastics the aspheric features and the low cost facility is also availed with the glass having the quality rich optical glass components. Although the weight factor of plastic optics is there the optical filter glass’ and its significance in the usage in the usage of cell phone lens assemblies and other optical applications makes it better than the plastics.
